Academic Year high-school programme (ages 15 – 17)
This is a course for students wishing to spend a full academic year (nine months) in Cahersiveen's local secondary school. Students live with a host family and attend TY (transition year) which combines a full range of subjects on the Irish curriculum with a series of extra curricular activities designed to increase students' social awareness, responsibility and maturity in the world outside school. This is an ideal way to immerse yourself in English language and Irish culture. We will do our best to place you with a host family where a son or daughter of the family is attending the same school. Host families are aware of the challenges facing long-term students and offer a calm, safe and welcoming environment for their international students.
The programme begins on Monday 26th August 2019 and runs for thirty-nine weeks until 25th May 2020.
As well as standard academic subjects such as mathematics, modern languages, English, geography, history, physical education, music and art, Cahersiveen's TY course offers a series of field trips, poetry and literature workshops, open days at Irish universities, a residential outdoor adventure week and a whole range of workshops developing practical and manual skills. Students participate in two work placement programmes designed to develop their work-related & communicative skills.
Asana will give participants a full orientation prior to and upon their arrival in Cahersiveen, and our coordinator will be available at all times for consultation and problem-solving. Students will study English with Asana three hours each week and will do an Asana excursion to a place of cultural or scenic interest once a month.
