Asana Story

Many many moons ago we had a beautiful idea. We were going to return to our homeland, Ireland, having spent a few years teaching English to the police in Italy and bring our new Italian friends with us on a tour of Ireland and teach them some English ‘on the road’. This idea evolved into a Colm & Adi partnership called ‘Land of Tours’, and adult students, mostly from Italy and Spain, came to Ireland to spend three-week language holidays, two of which were spent in the capital and one in the stunningly beautiful South West Kerry region. In 1995, we had a life changing experience when we met the great Mario Rinvolucri at an ACELS conference in Dublin. We cast aside our text books and embraced a more holistic, humanistic philosophy, opening ourselves up to a brand- new paradigm and a host of unimaginable experiences. Four babies and a dog later we thought it might be best to settle in one place We chose Cahersiveen, Co. Kerry to be our base. We chose it because of its stunning location, friendly locals and authentic, traditional way of life. We made a GREAT decision. We trained in Yoga, NLP, counselling and changed the name of our school to Asana (the Sanskrit word for yoga posture). Nowadays, students come to Asana from Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland, Kazakhstan, Russia, Poland, Laos, Guinea and many others. We work with ELT teachers, local artists, musicians, story tellers, nature enthusiasts and dreamers. As we move towards a more transpersonal approach to education, we are reminded of how exciting our transition was into holistic and humanistic learning all those years ago. We were so passionate about our work! But, we are still as passionate now as we were then and this time it’s even more exciting as there are more of us! We invite all of our students to embark with us on our new journey of discovery.

    • Hello, my name is Elora DAVITO, I'm french and I'm 15 years old. Last year I went on a trip to Ireland with Asana School during 3 weeks. I just had the best holidays of my life. In slept in an irish family, I was with a Russian girl, I got along very well with her and we talk still very often! The family was perfect, I was talking a lot with them, they had three equally nice children. Every morning, the bus passed and take us to school, there I met some very nice and funny people, students and teachers. I learned a lot of things while having fun and it was great. On the afternoon, some activities was planned, like hiking, bike, art, canoe... It's been very good, and now I have very good memories. Next, we came back to the family, and I cold go out on the evening/night. Every friday, one party was planned. Thank you so much for this travel, there are not enougt words to describe all that this trip has left me. I really regret nothing and if I could do it again I would do it with huge pleasure.

    • The month I spent at Asana was one of the best times of my life. I went there in the summer of 2007 with a scholarship from the Valencian government. It was the first time I travelled abroad and I was very excited about it. Also, my sister got the opportunity to study with them four years before, and she came back home telling us how cool everything was. I still remember the moment I got out of the plane, how nervous I felt. Everything was new, different. But the host family was very kind, and from the first minute they tried to make me feel comfortable by including me in their daily life. At the school, the teachers did their best to motivate us, and I have to say they were quite successful! We loved their lessons! Also, they kept an eye on us to make sure we were ok, and they were always there with a smile and a good piece of advice. We spent an amazing month! I felt so happy that I keep comming back every summer.

    • Asana School is an extraordinary experience, although you might not realize this as you live and enjoy day after day there. On your last night you feel that it is impossible to part with these wonderful people, who are not there only to teach you - they love you and care about you, they are genuinely interested in you and happy to share, they had become your family, your close friends. I miss them from the day I left and I'm certainly coming back.
